Dental Emergencies

The following are dental emergencies and need immediate attention:

  • Toothache.  If you are experiencing a toothache, rinse mouth with warm salty water and see dentist as soon as possible.


  • Knocked out tooth.  If it is not possible to place tooth back in socket, place tooth in a cup of milk, water containing a pinch of salt or in saliva.  Get to a dentist within one half hour.


  • Loosened Tooth.  Get to a dentist right away. 


  • Injuries to tongue, cheeks, gums or lips resulting in continuous bleeding.  Rinse mouth out with mild salt water.  Use moistened gauze or teabag to apply pressure for 15-20 minutes.  Get to a dentist right away or go to hospital emergency room.


  • Other dental emergencies include: abscess, chipped, broken or cracked teeth, and objects caught between teeth that cannot be removed with dental floss.
